Country Paving and Ornamental Ltd Manx Hunter Trials Championships 2024 September 28th 2024 The finals of the Manx Hunter Trials Championships sponsored by Country Paving and Ornamental Ltd will be held at the Pony Club on September 28th, 2024. The classes will be 40cm, 60/70cm, 80cm and 1.00m with separate awards for Juniors (U16 on January 1st, 2024) and Seniors. Members will need to qualify their horses and ponies for the finals by completing 2 jumping clear rounds (time faults not counted) at their chosen heights between March 1st and September 23rd 2024. Both clear rounds must be at different venues i.e. one at Chasers and one at Pony Club. The qualifying hunter trials are: Competitors may qualify the same combination at a maximum of 2 height sections only. Manx Horse Council Challenge Series 2023 The MHC Challenge series for 2023 has drawn to a close with the recent TREC Challenge in February (postponed from September). The series was well supported by the members with 12 clubs participating in one or more of the rounds. At a meeting in November the members decided to draw a close to the Challenge series as after 3 successful years it had achieved its objectives in increasing participation generally and introducing members to a discipline that perhaps they had not tried before. In its place the MHC is introducing Championships in Show Jumping, Dressage and Hunter Trials. There are qualifying rounds at various venues for all 3 disciplines over the year and there are minimum qualifying requirements for each championship final. Qualifying rounds must be achieved at different centres as promoting participation is one of the objectives of this new initiative. We are grateful to our sponsors for these finals, Ramsey Crookall Wealth Management, Evoke and Country Paving and Ornamental Ltd. We hope that with their support we can showcase the best that Isle of Man equestrianism sport can offer at the finals which will be held in September (Hunter Trials), October (Dressage) and November (Show Jumping). Evoke Manx Dressage Championships Supported by the IOMDG October 26th 2024 The finals of the Manx Dressage Championships sponsored by Evoke, are to be held at Conrhenny Equestrian Centre on October 26th. The finals will have classes in Intro, Preliminary, Novice, Elementary, Medium and Advanced Medium levels with separate awards for Juniors (U16 on January 1st 2024) and Seniors. Members will need to qualify their horses and ponies for the finals by achieving 66% or above in Intro, Preliminary and Novice tests and 63% or above at Elementary, Medium and Advanced Medium tests on 5 occasions at least 2 different centres at qualifying shows between February 1st and October 14th 2024. Where there are two tests at the same level then the first effort will count as the qualifier at that show. Ramsey Crookall Manx Show Jumping Championships November 17th 2024 The finals of the show jumping championships are to be held at Ballavartyn Equestrian Centre on November 17th. The finals will be at 40, 60, 80cm and 1m for ponies and 50, 70, 90cm and 1.10m for horses. Members will need to qualify their horses and ponies for the finals by completing 7 double clears at their height at least 2 different centres at 19 qualifying shows between February 1st and November 10th 2024. Manx Horse Council Announces Sponsor for 2022 Challenge Series
The MHC reintroduced the concept of inter club competition last year in a drive to increase participation in the different equestrian disciplines. In what initially was a modest ambition turned out to be a very successful series of competitions with 13 teams lining up for the Dressage Challenge and the other disciplines being very well supported. Given that there are only a finite number of equestrians on the island it was the MHC’s objective to encourage riders of one discipline to perhaps try something that they had not considered previously. Adding in the element of friendly rivalry between the organisations brought out the best in the islands equestrians and not only was there good competition but also great enjoyment particularly at the Mounted Games, Driving and TREC, disciplines that many riders had not previously tackled. It is very pleasing to hear that these disciplines are reporting increased interest since the challenges. 2022 sees an expanded series with ten rounds of challenges for the members to tackle. The first of these is scheduled for April 3rd when Ballavartyn EC will be hosting the Arena Eventing Challenge. Alice Forster, Clinical Director at Milan Veterinary Practice, has been very supportive of the MHC’s objectives. “We at the Practice are delighted to continue our financial support for the MHC Challenge Series. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying their equestrian sport last year and we look forward to another great series”. Isolation of Equines Following Return from the UK Now that Covid regulations have been relaxed our manx equestrians are travelling to the UK for competitions. Isolation means keeping the horse in a separate air space and not just a stable at the end of the barn. Many of these diseases are spread by air borne contagion along with direct and indirect contact with the horse or its handlers. The early signs that your horse may have an infection include dullness, not eating, coughing and perhaps a runny nose. Take its temperature per rectum (normal temperature is 100.5 +/- 0.5 degrees F or 38 degrees C). If you have concerns then speak to your vet who may wish to take nasopharyngeal swabs and blood samples in order to identify the cause of the infection. Raymond Cox MVB, MRCVS 21/07/2021

Laminitis & Colic There has been an reported increase in the incidence of both laminitis and colic cases recently from local vets. This has been attributed to the unusual spring weather that we have had on the island, very wet, then very cold followed by a dry period all of which delayed the grass growth. However over the last 2 weeks the temperatures have risen and with the recent rain the grass has shot up. This has also resulted in an increase in sugars in the grass. These conditions mean that those horses and ponies susceptible to laminitis and colic need to be managed carefully. Consult your vet for specific advice but limit the amount of time that your horse / pony spends grazing rich grass and feed supplement hay prior to turnout.

TREC Championships TREC Isle of Man held their first event since the end of the third lock-down at Conrhenny Equestrian Centre last Sunday, hosting the Manx Horse Council Members’ TREC Championship sponsored by Milan Veterinary Practice.
On a cold, wind-swept day interrupted by an occasional light shower, the competition was held outside starting with the obstacles, control of paces and orienteering (Conrhenny plantation.) It was a shorter and simplified format, to encourage new people to the sport of TREC. AGM Notification NOTICE OF THE MANX HORSE COUNCIL AGM All registered members are invited to attend the AGM of the Manx Horse Council in accordance with the constitution, a copy of which may be found on the MHC website. One third of the committee members are required to retire, those members having been in office the longest to retire first. As the new committee was elected last year all the members are of equal duration and lots were drawn as stated in the constitution. Therefore the following positions will be voted upon on May 18th:

Updated Guidance for Sports and Recreation Activities Following the Chief Minister’s announcement (made on Thursday, 15th April 2021), providing there are no further reasons to extend the current COVID restrictions, as of Monday, 19th April 2021 at 00:01 there will be no restrictions (other than those relating to borders) in place which should impact the recommencement of Sports & Recreation in the Isle of Man. Manx Horse Council AGM Postponement Due to the continued concern over the Covid 19 pandemic the scheduled AGM for the Manx Horse Council has been postponed until Tuesday May 18th 2021. The venue is Ballavartyn Equestrian Centre and the start time will be 7.30pm. Members are invited to submit proposals for the agenda, including alterations to the constitution, nominations for the positions of Treasurer, First Aid Co-ordinator and Coaching Co-ordinator and any other relevant business. Equine Herpes Virus British Showjumping (BS) has issued advice to its members who may be bringing horses back to the UK from Europe regarding the risk associated with Equine Herpes Virus (EHV). There has been an outbreak of EHV in Spain with other countries now being infected. EHV usually causes a mild respiratory infection with a raised temperature. However there is a neurological form of the disease which can cause a fatal paralysis and EHV can cause abortion in pregnant mares. The risk to IOM horses is very low but horse owners should read the advice given by BS and it has excellent guidelines for effective isolation. All horses and ponies coming to the island should be quarantined for 14 days minimum irrespective of other risk factors. If horses have come from Europe or have been in contact with horses recently imported from Europe then along with strict isolation two blood samples and nasophargngeal swabs taken 10 days apart are required. EHV is not a notifiable disease by law, but similar to strangles, very good biosecurity is required to keep it out of the Isle of Man. A vaccine is available for horses deemed at risk against EHV. Members' Championships The Horse Council was reconstituted last year and the new committee, headed by chairperson Raymond Cox, is embarking on revamping the activities of the Council. Part of these objectives is the reintroduction of the inter-club championships that used to be so popular some years ago. Restyled as Members' Championships the Horse Council hopes to stage, in conjunction with the member clubs, competitions in all disciplines including Show Jumping, Dressage, Cross-Country, Mounted Games, Working Hunters and TREC. Many members specialise in one or two of these events and the Horse Council wish to see a broader participation in all the equestrian sports. The championships are designed to allow members try a discipline that perhaps they are new to. The first Members' Championship is TREC and will be held at Conrhenny Equestrian Centre on March 28th. The other championships will be held throughout the year. Alice Forster, clinical director of Milan Veterinary Practice, said that she was very pleased to back the Manx Horse Council. First Aid Training Now we are moving away from lockdown, the Manx Horse Council are pleased to be able to offer a 3 day Adult First Aid at Work course provided by St John's Ambulance local trainers . We had dates drafted but had to put them on hold with the circuit breaker but are now in a position to run. (This is a full course not a refresher, which will be arranged later if there are enough takers, if not people may have to go on a general refresher themselves through St Johns) St Johns will endeavour to make this course equine focussed but it will not be an Equine specific FAW qualification. The dates are Fri 12th Feb, Weds 17th Feb & Mon 22nd Feb 2021, ie starting a week on Friday. We have opted for spreading the course over 3 weeks on different days, to reduce impact and hopefully make it easier to get time off which is going to be really difficult with everyone going back to work today. Sessions will be from 9.30 til 5pm but we can take 30 mins for lunch and finish at 4.30pm to allow time to get to the horses/family if preferred. Cost is £200 per person incl VAT - bring your own packed lunch. To be paid in full at time of booking , places first come first served. MHC will endeavour to claim up to 50% from IOM sport based on up to 2 people per riding club/centre, which will be refunded upon receipt. There are only 12 places available , but a further course will be provided if there is demand. Role of the Athlete, Parent & Coach Workshop Hi All, The MHC are pleased to be able to offer to the Equine community a further workshop provided by IOM sport & recreation next Weds 3rd Feb on zoom from 7 til 8. The workshop will last approx one hour and is entitled the Role of the Athlete, Parent & Coach. It is based around how coaches, young people & their parents can develop strong and mutually beneficial relationships with and between each other. It is being led by Paul Jones who is a lecturer & advisor in Sports Coaching and Athlete development for IOM Sport & has previously worked for and provided consultancy support to Professional Sporting Organisations in Europe and the UK. We can accommodate reasonable numbers, but they are still restricted to first come basis. Manx Horse Council Covid 19 Updated - 10th Jan 2021 The new rules came in to effect on 00.01 on January 7th 2021 and are due to remain in place for an initial period of 21 days. This time round it is a slightly different set of circumstances, we know a lot more about the virus and how it is transmitted. We know more about the risks and the do's / don'ts of how to behave so that this lockdown is both successful and as short as possible. The Manx equestrian community will do its part in continuing to look after our horses and ponies whilst ensuring that we keep ourselves and others safe. All competitions and training have been suspended on the advice of the Sports Council. However you are permitted to attend to your horse outside of your property as necessary. If you are attending to your horse's needs at a livery yard please observe all the government regulations which can be found www.covid19.gov.im
It would be advisable to take time now to draw up a contingency plan for the care of your horse should you become ill or have to self isolate. Agree cover with your friend, neighbour, relative or a paid worker and make sure that they know how to look after your horse. A written plan would be best containing the relevant information and include contact numbers for your veterinary surgeon / farrier etc. Plan for the worst scenario and hope for the best. 10/01/21 |
