Safeguarding & Welfare

i. Developments in safeguarding good practice regularly take place and these need to be implemented at club level by awareness and training. Including through regular training of all those in the club to varying degrees, depending on the work they do for the club. MHC will help keep all nominated safeguarding leads up to date;

ii. MHC can give assistance to the nominated safeguarding lead in the event that there is concern about specific individuals or circumstances.

In our new constitution, it has been mentioned, that safeguarding children is to be a priority. We would like to develop good practice in this area. Our intention will be to introduce a register of all designated welfare offices from each club, there can be more than one officer.

A welfare officer’s role within a club is:

• To act as first point of contact for members, volunteers, parents, other children and young people
  
• Where concerns about a child’s welfare, are identified. A child being anyone under the age of 18yrs.
  
• To promote the club’s best practice guidance and/or code of conduct within the club (British horse society has templates on their websites to use as a guide).
  
• Ensure appropriate confidentiality is maintained at all times.

The MSR (Manx sport and Recreation) run two useful training courses.

The first one is called Safeguarding and Protecting children, which I would recommend all club committee members, volunteers and establishment staff to attend. The course is also about keeping you safe as well as protecting children.

The second one is Welfare Officer training, which I would recommend only the club committee members, volunteers and establishment staff, that are the nominated Welfare Offices to attend.

The safeguarding training is on about six times a year and maybe once or twice for the Welfare officer training. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for links when a course is coming up.

My role as Manx Horse Council Welfare Officer is:

• To be available for help or advice at any time
• To offer support and guidance
• Offer assistance and update with any training dates

You will learn all you need to know on the training sessions I have mentioned above.

The protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults whilst participating in any sport is of the highest importance as they should be able to take part in a fun, safe environment and be protected from harm.

Safeguarding children is everybody’s responsibility, if you have concerns a child is in immediate danger of serious harm always phone the police.
